Happy New Year!!

We at Climate of Our Future would like to thank you for all the continued support you have shown.  As we close 2009 lets reflect back on some of what we covered.

We just presented this award to close our year with acknowledgement  http://climateofourfuture.org/its-time-to-award-those-blogs-we-feel-are-making-a-positive-change-to-our-climate/.   We at the new and improved Climate of Our Future (COOF) believe in blogging with a purpose. Our particular mission is no small task — changing the world we live in for the better — but we take great comfort in the fact that we’re not struggling alone to achieve this.

The EPA released a new rule that requires large ships registered in the US to reduce their air pollution. The new rule, signed by the head of EPA late last week, requires ships with large engines to switch over to cleaner low sulfur fuel and to meet stricter nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions standards. The new rule comes after ten years of litigation from Earthjustice seeking cleaner standards for large ships. http://climateofourfuture.org/epa-forces-ships-to-clean-up/

In a report to the U.S. Bureau of Land Management made public on November 15, 2009, as part of a lawsuit filed last January, Mountain Coal Company, asserts it is not “economically feasible” to capture and use, or otherwise address, methane currently venting into the atmosphere at the West Elk coal mine. The company, a subsidiary of Arch Coal, says it has no viable alternative but to continue dumping massive amounts of uncontrolled methane pollution into the air at the mine in western Colorado. http://climateofourfuture.org/coal-mine-operator-refuses-to-cap-climate-pollution/

I brought you videos by Paul Rose titled “Meltdown A Global Warming Journey”http://climateofourfuture.org/meltdown-a-global-warming-journey-by-paul-rose/ I felt these to be very educating and enjoyable to view.

Al Gore: We Are Now in a Crucial Moment — It’s Time to Make a Decision http://climateofourfuture.org/al-gore-we-are-now-in-a-crucial-moment-its-time-to-make-a-decision/

In one study we learned, that measures to stop global warming risk being as harmful to tribal peoples as climate change itself, according to a new report from tribal rights organisation Survival International. http://climateofourfuture.org/moves-to-stop-global-warming-are-devastating-tribal-people/

I read a story a while back that continues to haunt me; In a more direct route, boaters may dump their trash right into the sea. In the past, this has been the main cause of plastics in the ocean. In 1975, the National Academy of Sciences estimated that 14 billion pounds of garbage was being dumped into the ocean every year. That’s more than 1.5 million pounds per hour. More than 85% of this trash was estimated to come from the world’s merchant shipping fleet in the form of cargo-associated wastes. According to the Academy, the United States could be the source of approximately one third of this ocean pollution.  http://www.whoi.edu/science/B/people/kamaral/plasticsarticle.html

These articles are only a small sample of what we recently discussed.  Looking back I see there is still so much to be done…so much we can do.  2010 is a time to act.  With us all doing our part we can make a difference.
