Coverleaf Blog: Being green and saving green over the holidays

The new Coverleaf Blog shares information on Midwest Living magazine’s tips for swtiching out your incandessant holiday lights for energy saving LEDs:

The latest issue of Midwest Living has a short feature on “greening up” your holiday lights this year, and they’re not talking about the color of the light bulbs. The crucial piece of advice is to trade in your incandescent holiday lights for LED-based light sets. An average user will save $19 per year on energy costs by making the swap. But the more interesting statistic to me was that if just 20% of homes in the U.S. switched to using LED-based holiday lights, that would save enough energy to power 100,000 homes for an entire year!

  1. I’m all for being green but I agree that if people have to spend more, it’s a lot harder for them to take action on being green. If something is natural, why does it cost more?

  2. You have to keep in mind that EVERYONE wants to be ‘Green’ and save the environment, IF it does NOT cost them anything! This bailout economy is going to make it very hard to be ‘green’ now. Mostly, the greenies-wannabes will be using green tips like ways to save on toilet water flushings and the like, anything to reduce their water and elelctric and gas heating bills, instead of forking out the massive amounts of moeny you need to make a ‘Zero-E house’ like the rich ‘green’ movie stars can actually afford to do. As an average citizen, where am I going to find the cash to retrofit solar cell panels on my roof or add windmills to my backyard and the like? For 99% of U.S. Citizenry in the present economic statis, NOT going to happen!
